A Week of Quantum Leaps and City Sights: My IEEE Trip to Toronto
23 October 2026
DOTC's Jieson Chua shares his experience at IEEE Quantum Week in Toronto, from emerging quantum technologies and hands-on learning to exploring Niagara Falls and the city.
Between September 13th and 18th, I had the incredible privilege of representing the Digital Ops-Tech Centre (DOTC) at the IEEE Quantum Week conference in Toronto, Canada. It was a week that seamlessly wove together the thrill of cutting-edge discovery, the wonder of natural landmarks, and the warmth of a truly cosmopolitan city — and I came back a richer person for it, both professionally and personally.

Expanding Horizons through Opportunity
One of the things I genuinely appreciate about being part of DOTC is the organisation's commitment to keeping its people at the forefront of emerging technology. Sending staff to international conferences like IEEE Quantum Week is a reflection of that commitment — a belief that real growth happens when you place yourself in rooms where the world's brightest minds are actively shaping the future. For me, this trip was exactly that kind of opportunity.
Diving Deep into the Quantum Frontier
The heart of the week was, of course, the conference itself. Across panels, workshops, and networking sessions, I immersed myself in the rapidly evolving world of quantum technology. What struck me most was how quickly the field is moving from theoretical promise to tangible application. Researchers and engineers from across the globe are actively developing quantum solutions in areas such as ultra-secure communications, advanced sensing, and complex optimisation — capabilities that are increasingly relevant to the kind of work we do at DOTC.
Engaging directly with these developments — asking questions, exchanging ideas with practitioners, and attending hands-on workshops — gave me a far richer understanding than any paper or article could. I returned with fresh perspectives and concrete ideas that I am eager to explore further with my team. It is this kind of direct exposure to the global technology landscape that makes DOTC a place where staff can genuinely grow their expertise and contribute meaningfully to the work ahead.

The Roar of Niagara Falls
Of course, a trip to Toronto would not be complete without a visit to Niagara Falls, and it absolutely lived up to its legendary reputation. Standing at the edge, feeling the mist on my face and the ground trembling beneath the sheer force of the water, was a humbling and oddly grounding experience. After days of intense, highly technical sessions, it was a powerful reminder of the awe-inspiring scale of the natural world — and a welcome reset for the mind.

Discovering Toronto’s Urban Charm
Beyond the conference halls, I made the most of my free time exploring Toronto's vibrant and wonderfully diverse cityscape. Wandering beneath the iconic CN Tower, with its commanding presence over the skyline, and strolling through the charming cobblestone paths of the Distillery District were highlights that made the city feel both grand and intimate at the same time. Toronto has a way of making you feel energised and curious — qualities that, I found, carried right back into the conference room with me each morning.

Coming Home with More
Trips like this one are a reminder of why I value being part of DOTC. The organisation understands that investing in its people — giving them the space to learn, explore, and be inspired — is what drives meaningful progress. I came home not just with new technical knowledge, but with a renewed sense of purpose and enthusiasm for the work we do together. I look forward to channelling everything I experienced in Toronto into the exciting challenges that lie ahead.
